Book 2 is more complex; wiser, sadder more poetic. The skills of journalism have since clearly changed for the worse. This explains why the characters never actually make it to the Northwest Passage. I bought this in an op shop. The first half was a survival and adventure story and the best part, in my opinion. All in all, the first half of the novel is a brisk, rousing historical adventure. The best fiction makes us think without realizing that we're doing it.Another great boook by this author. I know it has left an impression that has been with me all this time, I think I just identified with central character, then to get the chance to go and walk on the the same ground. What happens, I guess, when you follow a life, and not just a couple years. And the love story seemed to have little basis and didn't interest me terribly, and it wasn't as amusing, either.I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as Arundel.
