Within this building the next generation of architects, urban planners, ecologists, builders and landscape architects learn to work in a highly connected way.
After fourteen months of construction, the building was completed in August 2014, four months ahead of schedule. The Joseph Reed Bank of NSW facade of 1856, formerly attached to the Old Commerce Building, has been restored and retained.The University of Melbourne's new academic building, the Melbourne School of Design (MSD), designed by Melbourne architect John Wardle and Boston-based architect Nader Tehrani.

University of Melbourne School of Design Events. It contains over 20,000 digital resources across six key phases of the project, from the Design Competition held in 2009 to the completion of construction in 2014, and its on-going use. “Far from creating a singular building, our endeavour has been to provide a place for learning and research that in itself illustrates an abundance of possibilities for students to consider when responding to demands of complex problems,” said John Wardle.The new building has four distinctly different facades, each of which responds to the unique conditions it faces.
The result, to be fair, is a wonderful new facility, in glass and wood and concrete and zinc, designed for visibility and engagement, filled with the kinds of complexities which have come to mark much of Wardle's work.
Following an international design competition JWA and NADAAA were appointed as architects to design the new Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning building for the University of Melbourne. The hanging studio transforms as it distances itself from the ceiling and creates an intimate gathering zone beneath it while maintaining the continuous plane of the Studio Hall floor.The new building continues the sequence of outdoor rooms arrayed across the campus, and forges strong links to the circulation routes that surround the site. The Studio Hall is enclosed to the west side by the former Bank of New South Wales façade, and to the east side the Studio Hall overlooks the new courtyard.
The design process has involved regular briefing meetings, workshops and presentations with various faculty user groups, University Committees and Reference groups.
